The appeal of the Pomeranian’s small size has led to a growing interest in even smaller versions. Known as Mini Pomeranians, teacups, or toy poms, these tiny dogs are a source of both fascination and controversy. While incredibly cute, understanding their origins and health risks is crucial for anyone considering one. These smallest of Poms are not an official breed variety but a result of selective breeding.
True Mini Pomeranians are simply smaller Poms from a standard litter, still falling within the AKC weight range of 3 to 7 pounds. The term “teacup” is a marketing term used by breeders to describe Poms that weigh less than 3 pounds. These are not a separate breed but rather the smallest individuals of the standard Pomeranian.
The demand for these extremely small dogs has led to some questionable breeding practices. Some breeders may use runts of the litter or breed two very small dogs together. This can increase the likelihood of passing on genetic health issues. The tiny size can be a symptom of underlying health problems rather than a desirable trait.
Health risks for these tiny Poms are significant. They are prone to hypoglycemia, a condition of low blood sugar, which can be life-threatening. Their delicate bones are more susceptible to fractures. Mini Pomeranians can also suffer from luxating patellas (dislocating kneecaps) and tracheal collapse, issues common in many small breeds.
Another concern is their fragility. Because of their tiny size, they are easily injured. A simple fall from a couch or an accidental step can cause serious harm. This makes them a less suitable pet for homes with small children or large, boisterous dogs. Their safety requires constant supervision and care.
Their reputation for having a “big dog” personality in a small body still holds true. Even the tiniest Poms are confident and intelligent. They need early socialization and training to develop into well-behaved adults. Their minds are as sharp as any standard Pomeranian’s, requiring mental stimulation to prevent destructive behavior.
